Nicky grew up on his parents Rainbow Farm, in Oldcastle, County Meath (IRL). He first took to fox hunting and eventing, before venturing over to show jumping in his late teens. At 18, Nicky won the hunt chase at the prestigious Dublin Horse Show, before notching another notable win in a speed derby which earned him the chance to train with Norwegian horsemen, JH Storm. Following his military-style-horsemanship-instruction with Storm, Nicky went on to compete, train and ride all over Europe, including spending time studying dressage with trainers from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
Since 2014, Nicky has been based in America, first working with Darragh Kenny (IRL) of Oakland Ventures, then at Hyperion Stud with the young horses, before moving on to work with a private client based in Virginia. Nicky’s gift to work with youngsters has served him well over the years, starting and aiding with several now top Grand Prix horses, including Kristen Vanderveen’s (USA) “Prince of Peace”, Lauren Hough’s (USA) “Gemino” and of course onto his very own “Javas Miss Jordan.”
Nicky has competed all over the world up to 5* Grand Prix level with a number of horses for both himself and dedicated owners. Nicky is a firm believer in listening to and doing what is right by the horse, often resulting in taking care of his horses better than he takes care of himself!
